What is Field Day?

Field Day, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, is held each year on the last weekend in June. It is a national event, first done in 1933, to practice operating in the field, using power sources not attached to the power grid.  Temporary stations are set up and operated, often in public locations to showcase Amateur Radio to the public.

Radios are operated from temporary shelters such as pavilions, tents and RVs, using temporary antennas, with emergency power (generators, batteries, solar). Field Day is an emergency exercise, a contest, and a 24-hour nerd party.
