Next ARROW Meeting, Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Greetings fellow ARROWheads (et al),
ARROW General meetings are always scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Doors open at 7pm for eyeball QSOs with a brief business meeting starting at 7:30pm. A radio related presentation then follows at roughly 8pm. Meetings are open to members and non-members alike – all are welcome to attend.

Date/Time: Wednesday May 13th 7:00pm – 9pm-ish

Location: Washtenaw Community College
4800 E Huron River Drive
Ann Arbor, MI 48105
Room BE-171 or 172

Presentation: “Wireless Ypsilanti” and OLSR Mesh networking [ www.wirelessypsi.com ]

Steve Pierce (K5HDL) from Wireless Ypsilanti will show us how inexpensive WiFi Access Points using special built-in software are being deployed by volunteers all over a large geographic area providing a free high-speed Internet access network. This is a form of OLSR “Mesh” networking that has taken off in popularity in the last several years as an easy plug-and-play wireless network topology. Simply deploy a number of nodes within RF range of their neighbor(s) and the network will *automatically* configure itself and route traffic around any outages. This is similar to the Amateur Radio “HSMM-Mesh” technology.

If you have an HSMM-Mesh node or a Meraki MR-18 AP, feel free to bring it along. Perhaps we can set up an ad-hoc network (time permitting).

One-Day Technician License Class, May 2, 2015

My next one-day Tech Class will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum in downtown Ann Arbor. The class will start at 9 am and run until 3:30 pm, at which time the license exam will be given.

There is a $10 fee for the class, except for students under the age of 18, who can attend free. I use this money to pay for expenses at our station, WA2HOM, at the museum. Also, I ask that you register beforehand. I like to limit the number of students to about 20, so that each student gets enough attention, and so that the volunteer examiners can administer the test expeditiously.

To register for the Saturday, May 2 class, send $10 to cwgeek@kb6nu.com via PayPal or send a check for $10 to:

Dan Romanchik
1325 Orkney Dr.
Ann Arbor, MI 48103

When I get your registration, I will put you on another e-mail list and send you more details a week or two before the class. After you register, download my study guide from http://www.kb6nu.com/tech-manual. The PDF version is free.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

73! <--ham lingo for "best regards" Dan KB6NU
