ARROW Support Your Parks Event Recap

Radio, friendship, and a first POTA activation made ARROW’s gathering at Waterloo State Recreation Area, Mill Lake Cabin 3 (B3) a success! The group logged 250+ QSOs and completed at least eight individual activations.

Parks on the Air’s Support Your Parks Weekends take place four times a year, on the third full weekends of January, April, July, and October. These activity weekends encourage operators to get outdoors, put parks on the air, and have fun. Official POTA event information

The bands were packed with activity! Alongside the POTA stations, the Illinois QSO Party, New York QSO Party, and BSA Jamboree-on-the-Air were active over the weekend. There was plenty to hear and work, making for a lively weekend of operating.

Our gathering brought together:

  • N8TEN — Ron, with Olivia [HOSTS]
  • KB6NU — Dan
  • W8EMV — Ed
  • AB3DC — Dinesh
  • N0SAI — Sai
  • AA8EA — Kyle
  • KF8BGR — Doug
  • KD6HWF — Rich
  • KC8ALN – Kari
  • W8TAM — Thom
  • W8MP — Mark
  • KD8EGG — Rose

A special congratulations goes to Doug, KF8BGR, for completing his first POTA activation! Sharing experience and helping another operator get started captures the spirit of these weekends.

Thanks to everyone who came out, operated, and helped others get on the air, and to the hunters who answered our calls. With more than 250 contacts, at least seven individual activations, and plenty of good company, it was a great outing at Waterloo!

ARROW Amateur Radio Field Day 2026

Field Day is ham radio’s open house, and it’s the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. Every fourth full weekend of June, licensed amateur radio operators set up temporary stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill, and service.

ARROW is back at the Ann Arbor Airport Soccer Fields this year, operating for 24 hours straight on emergency power. You’ll see solar panels, batteries, and generators powering it all, antennas on portable masts, and operators running six stations across HF, VHF, and UHF using voice, Morse code, digital modes, and maybe even amateur radio satellites.

The public is invited. Whether you’re a licensed ham, someone curious about radio, or just looking for something different to do on a summer weekend, come on out. Stop by the Information Tent, take a tour of the stations, and meet the operators.

First time on the air? Try our GOTA station.

GOTA stands for Get On The Air. It’s a dedicated station where anyone, licensed or not, can make their first-ever radio contact under the supervision of a licensed coach. No experience needed. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to talk to someone halfway across the country using nothing but a radio and a wire, this is your chance.

Curious about getting licensed?

ARROW offers monthly license testing and can help you get started in the hobby. Stop by the Information Tent during Field Day to learn more, or visit our testing page for upcoming exam sessions.
